Every year, intrepid drivers and their vintage rides unite for a cause bigger than themselves: the Outback Car Trek, Australia’s iconic charity rally supporting the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS).
A Classic with Heart
Car612, like all Trek entrants, was required to be at least 30 years old and reinforced to endure harsh outback terrain—think strengthened front ends and engine bash plates to defend against the gritty Aussie landscape. Tackling this in a vintage 2WD car? Absolutely legendary.
From Bathurst to Cairns: 3,800 km of Purpose
The 35th Outback Car Trek kicked off on 29 May 2025 in Bathurst and wrapped 3,800 km later in Cairns on 8 June Along the way, Car612 and 239 other trekkers passed through stops like Dubbo, Bourke, Longreach, and Julia Creek—each a meaningful hub in RFDS history
Fueling Communities & Lifesaving Services
This year’s rally raised over $1.58 million, pushing the event’s lifetime contributions past $37 million Beyond the donations, trekkers injected an average of $75,000 per day into local economies—on essentials like fuel, food, lodging, and repairs
Safety on the Move: Medics Join the Road
To keep the adventure safe, RFDS medics—Dr Guy Hardwick and Flight Nurse Kerry Lyn Ukena—joined Car612’s trek as 24/7 support. Their presence not only reassured participants but also spotlighted the critical healthcare services RFDS delivers, especially in remote areas.
The Final Lap of a Trusted Leader
2025 marked a significant transition. After nearly two decades, Bill Patrick—affectionately dubbed “Chief Excitement Officer”—retired from organizing the Trek. Management has since passed to the RFDS South Eastern Section, ensuring the event’s legacy continues with integrity
Why This Matters—and Why It’s Post-Worthy
Car612’s participation embodies so much more than a road rally. It’s:
A powerful fundraising campaign, delivering lifesaving healthcare and essential services across Australia.
A catalyst for community growth, enriching regional towns through both economic and social engagements.
A testament to passion and purpose, brought to life by dedicated organizers, participants, and medics alike.
Car612’s 2025 trek reminds us that adventure and impact ride in the same vehicle.
